"ANDREW MARTIN
1965-2002
It is with the deepest regret and shock that we all learned of Andrew's sudden and unexpected death last Thursday evening. He was 37 years old. Andrew was a severe diabetic from his childhood days and this was in recent years complicated by heart related ailments. He was not one to complain about anything and went about a normal everyday life working as a joiner with the Firm John J. MacDonald, Eochar. His quality of work was always outstanding. Much was also done outwith working hours in which he made his particular joinery skills so freely available to so many. St. Peter's Hall has over the years benefited enormously from his willingness to be of service to his Church and parish. There is barely a room in the parish house in which Andrew's handiwork cannot be seen as he helped out in times of need and emergency, freely giving of his time, his skill and his very special talent. Many others too have freely benefited from the remarkable ability, kindness and generosity of Andrew Martin.
Not content merely with his special professional skills, he also loved croft work and with his late father, Allan, so recently deceased and his late uncle, Donald, also recently deceased he worked tirelessly at various aspects of crofting as well as looking after sheep and cattle.
Andrew was also deeply involved with the social life of the Church and the social life of the community at various levels. He was an invaluable member of the Church Hall Committee. He was always among the first to volunteer his help and expertise whenever it was required. This was also true with his involvement with the social life of the community.
Wherever help was needed Andrew Martin was sure to be there in a very quiet and professional way and without fuss or ado, without complaint or challenge, he would get on with what had to be done.
His faith too was special. Andrew took his faith life seriously. He wouldn't speak much about it. He wouldn't try to explain it or argue about it, he just lived it and loved it!
No comment about Andrew's life would be fair without mention of his love of following all kinds of sport. He was especially keen on football and loved supporting his favourite football team, Celtic FC. His home is not without reminders of his love for the game and his team.
Andrew's remains are to be taken to St. Peter's Church on Saturday evening at 8 pm. The funeral Mass is to take place on Sunday 16 (today) at 11.30am.
To his mother Peggy, his brother, Donald John and sisters, Jean, Maria and Louise, we extend our very sincere sympathy. The whole community is as one in their sorrow at the loss of someone who was special to us all."
