PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the lack of collectors there will be no door-to-door cemetery collection for this fiscal year 2023-2024.

Cladh Hallan Association, a registered charity, maintains the Community Cemetery used by the Communities of South Uist and beyond.  Its maintenance of the Cemetery depends on voluntary donations from those who have an interest in the upkeep of this Cemetery – those at home and away who have loved ones interred there.

We rely on donations from visitors and residents alike; any donation, large or small are most welcome!

Standing Order Form Download Available

Why not consider setting up a standing order for your annual donation this year?  For as little or as much as you wish, either monthly or annually, you can still contibute to the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery.  As Hallan is community-owned and a registered charity, we rely on the Community's donations to keep Hallan financially stable.

If you wish to start your standing order, you can download the form in either Microsoft Word format or PDF format. Then please post or drop it off at your bank for processing.  Alternatively, if you have digital banking, you can set up a standing order online, or you can always donate via Paypal on the "Donate" tab on the website.

Alternatively, you can set up a direct debit with your bank or on your digital banking website.

Uploading Graves on this Website

We apologise for the length of time is has been since our website was updated with those loved ones have been interred in the Cemetery over the past 2 1/2  years. Some of the delay is due to Covid restrictions, as well as there is only one volunteer (who works full time) that is undertaking this work. It is hoped that this will be recitifed over the summer months, but it may take longer than that to fully update the site. To keep this website updated is a huge undertaking, and to do this has taken much longer than we would have wished.

Any questions or concerns, please email us at hallancemetery@gmail.com

INTRODUCTION TO HALLAN CEMETERY

Cladh Hallan Cemetery is located in the Community of Daliburgh on the Island of South Uist, which is at the southern end of the Western Isles. The island is twenty-two miles long and varies in width from three to seven miles wide.  South Uist is part of Scotland's Western Islands, where the Gaelic language thrives (over half the population are native Gaelic speakers). Hallan is located on Daliburgh's machair (Gaelic for common grazing land) near archaeological settlements of the same name.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The idea to digitise the burial records was first initiated by the late Very Reverend John Angus Canon Galbraith (d. 2006), Curate (1971 - 1977) and Parish Priest (1991 - 2006) of St. Peter's RC Church, Daliburgh. This idea began in the early 90's, when Canon Galbraith returned to St. Peter's from Oban to serve as Parish Priest.  His determination to preserve these records for future generations has been realised in this database and therefore, is respectfully dedicated to him.

With the help of many decades of faithful record-keeping by Hallan's previous caretaker, Archie Walker (RIP), and his father before him, most of this information would not be possible.

We hope that it is helpful to you.
