“Robert Bell, retired Headmaster of Lochboisdale School, died at his home on Wednesday afternoon after a lengthy illness. He was 67 years. Previously Headmaster at Brevaig, Barra, Mr. Bell moved to Lochboisdale over 20 years ago. In both places he endeared himself to the community earning the greatest of esteem and respect. This he won firstly by his own person, which in an unassuming way displayed all the qualities of a real man, husband, and father; secondly by his devotion to his great vocation as a teacher; and thirdly by his great love for the little children commended to his charge. This latter quality was magnetic for the children were greatly attracted to their 'old Headmaster' with an appreciative love for his fatherly care for them, and even as he lay on his death bed his eyes lit up at the sight of a little child. It was this quality too - his love and devotion to children - that made one see in Robert Bell a man of deep yet simple faith, a man who appreciated the importance of the words of sacred Scripture "unless you become like little children you shall not enter the kingdom of Heaven.”
He is now gone, fortified by the Rites of Holy Mother Church, to reap the eternal rewards of the faithful followers of Christ. We who still linger on in this valley of tears live to learn from his example to be simple and good.
To his wife and sons we offer our sincere sympathy on the loss of a good husband and father. Our Lady of Sorrows comfort them in their sorrow, and to Robert Bell God grant eternal rest.” (Written by Mgr. Neil MacKellaig in 1967)
