Additional Info:“It is with the deepest regret that we announce yet another tragedy involving our young men at sea. Word came on Thursday, 11th November, that Donald MacNeil, Burnside, Smerclate, aged 25, was lost overboard from the "Empire Star" of the Blue Star Line, in waters west of Tasmania. To his parents, brothers and sisters we express our sincere sympathy. Our condolences also go to Ann Maclntyre, Paisley, whom Donald was to marry in the New Year. Ann, we may mention, is a daughter of Domhnull Ruadh am Bard.
Donald MacNeil's innate goodness and faithfulness makes the parting a severe blow indeed. Yet, from the knowledge of the exemplary Christian type he was, there must now spring deep consolation. The time span allotted to him may seem short but he made noble use of it to gain access to what alone will last and is worth having. Pray for him, that if he is not already in final possession he may soon be." (Written by Mgr. Neil MacKellaig in 1965)
Note: It is unknown at this time when the body was recovered and when the funeral took place. The parish burial records do not list this information. It is hoped this will be discovered as soon as possible. Until then, this information has been intentionally left blank.
